Samyama

Namaskaram,

Below are the guidelines to be followed pertaining to diet while preparing for Samyama.

Diet

The following dietary guidelines should be followed for at least 60 days before the program:

  • Avoid negative-pranic foods, like
    • Garlic, onion, green and red chilli (includes chilli flakes, chilli powder, jalapenos), brinjal (eggplant), asafoetida (hing)
    • Coffee (even decaf), tea, alcohol, cigarettes, and other nervous stimulants
    • All kinds of recreational drugs must be strictly avoided (LSD, Marijuana, Ecstasy, mushrooms, etc.)
  • For spice you can use Black Pepper or peppercorn.
  • Avoid non-vegetarian food (including eggs). Edible mushrooms do not come under this category.
  • Avoid dairy in any form.
  • Avoid animal products like goat/ camel/ yak milk/ curd etc.
  • Nut milk (Soya Milk/ Almond milk, etc.) or any plant-based milk is fine.
  • Kanji (porridges made from cereals, e.g., Sanjeevini mix, ragi/finger millet, bajra/pearl millet) are a good alternative.
  • Consumption of Ghee is alright.
  • Bring at least 50% natural food into your diet:
    • Fruits, salads, sprouts, nuts
    • Sprouted green gram and soaked groundnuts (peanuts) as much as possible
  • Aim for a 100% natural food diet (ideal)

Note: Sanjeevini mix is available at Isha Shoppee.

Food Guidelines

  • Keep the food largely sattvic. Sattvic food means the food that makes the body light and the mind alert. Like fruits, vegetables, sprouts, soaked nuts, whole grains, honey, and food eaten in its raw form to the extent possible. Such food supports balance, clarity, and a sense of ease within.
  • Avoid Tamasic foods. Anything that is overcooked, stale, fried, excessively processed, or stored for too long tends to make the system sluggish. Eating such food regularly lowers the level of alertness and creates lethargy in the system.
  • The quality and quantity of food both matter. You should never feel weak or tired — if that happens, either the quality or the quantity is not sufficient.
  • Sadhguru often reminds us that the more raw food we include, the better. Eating slowly and consciously makes a big difference in how the body receives it.
  • Salad does not mean just cucumber and tomato. It can be a wholesome mix — groundnuts, sprouts, fresh vegetables. Even one handful of groundnuts and sprouts can nourish deeply.
  • You can buy the Isha recipe book available online.
  • About 50% of the diet, other than natural food, can be a mix of different grains and millets, not just rice and chapati. Vary the pulses, mix the vegetables, keep it colorful and alive.
  • Best to avoid processed & packaged foods with artificial ingredients, preservatives, and which contain dairy products like protein powders. It’s best to avoid supplements with animal products unless it’s absolutely necessary for medical purposes.

Some examples of packaged food with dairy & preservatives:

  • Chocolate and candies – Many contain milk solids, whey, casein.
  • Non-dairy labeled beverages or ice creams – “Non-dairy” sometimes still contain casein (milk protein).
  • Energy bars or protein bars – Whey protein or casein may be listed in the ingredients.
  • Powdered drinks – Protein powders, hot chocolate, or malt drinks may contain milk solids.
